Introduction to Research Methodology – Course Summary
This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts, approaches, and techniques of research, with special relevance to social sciences and economics. It aims to develop a clear understanding of what research is, why it is undertaken, and how systematic inquiry contributes to knowledge creation, policy formulation, and evidence-based decision-making.
The course begins by explaining the meaning, nature, scope, and objectives of research, highlighting the difference between research and non-research activities. It familiarizes students with the research process, including problem identification, formulation of research questions and hypotheses, review of literature, and selection of appropriate research designs.
Students are exposed to various types of research—such as basic and applied research, qualitative and quantitative research, exploratory, descriptive, and analytical studies—along with commonly used methods of data collection like surveys, interviews, observation, and use of secondary data. The course also introduces sampling techniques, measurement, and basic data analysis concepts.
An important component of the course is research ethics, which emphasizes academic honesty, avoidance of plagiarism, informed consent, and responsible use of data. The course further provides guidance on report writing, referencing styles, and presentation of research findings.
Overall, the course builds foundational research skills, critical thinking, and analytical ability, preparing students for higher studies, project work, dissertations, and professional research in economics and related social sciences.
